Vocalist and guitarist Ben Walsh explains:
This song was conceptualized while touring internationally after starting a new relationship. I was reflecting on an international tour years before when my home life was in a rough place, and that took over the entire experience. I remembered feeling mentally split between the two places, unable to be in the moment even though it was this amazing experience in a new place. ‘New Detroit‘ is about the contrast between the two experiences, and how it felt like two completely different lives.
Of the video, he adds:
I was thinking about how I find inspiration to write. Sometimes it just comes to you mysteriously. The song ‘New Detroit‘ is sort of different from most songs I write, so the video reflects the concept of experimenting to find inspiration.
“New Detroit” follows previous singles “Hesitation”, “Lemon Mouth”, and “Cat’s Cradle”, which earned praise and support from SPIN, The New York Times’ Playlist (“a confident step out of the shadow of the past and into the band’s future“), Pitchfork, NPR Music (New Music Friday Spotify/Apple playlist), KKBOX’s ⻄洋獨立最前線 and Indie Picks playlist, Apple Music‘s Breaking Rock playlist in India and Korea, Stereogum, Brooklyn Vegan, Uproxx, Under the Radar, and more.

About the band’s upcoming album:
The band’s forthcoming sixth album ‘I Won’t Care How You Remember Me’, recently named among 2021’s ‘Most Anticipated Albums’ by Stereogum and Alternative Press, is due out March 5th via Hopeless Records.
‘I Won’t Care How You Remember Me’, produced by Tigers Jaw and Will Yip, finds the Scranton, Pennsylvania-based band at the height of their powers, fusing their collective skills with the synchronicity and energy they honed over several years of non-stop touring. Whereas their latest output, 2017’s spin, was replete with several dense layers of instruments and vocals, ‘I Won’t Care How You Remember Me’ pushes the elements of liveliness and human connectivity forward. This back-to-the-basement approach resulted in a new songwriting dynamic: ‘I Won’t Care How You Remember Me’ marks the first time all four members shared songwriting input. The band’s most sonically ambitious and lyrically affecting album to date, ‘I Won’t Care How You Remember Me’ sees a newfound freshness and creative freedom crystalizing the lush world of Tigers Jaw.
