In a world awash with conformity and banality, there emerges a sonic force that refuses to conform. Hailing from the cities of Bacolod and Dumaguete, Apebreeder is a band that channels its collective discontent into a powerful musical expression. With band members, BVRAS on drums and backing vocals, Mr. Z on bass, and the enigmatic Egor on guitar and vocals, the band dropped their latest EP, “Now I Hate Everything,”.
This EP is a visceral exploration of the effects of late industrialization and the accumulated resentment from being alienated in modern society. According to Jared Poblador (Egor), the band’s guitarist and vocalist, “we’re pretty much just pissed about everything and everyone.” The tracks delve into the gloom, dread, nostalgia, and fluctuating moments of clarity, only to be overtaken again by bitterness and agitation. Apebreeder draws inspiration from unconventional sources such as Ted Kaczynski and Georges Bataille, individuals displaced by technology and industrialization, and even their witch dog, Bonjing. Their hate and bitterness against the world serve as their primary influences, manifesting in each note and lyric.
Compared to their previous releases, “Now I Hate Everything” boasts an overall gloomier and darker sound. The band deliberately confined themselves to a 12x14ft dilapidated hut in the middle of nowhere torecord the tracks on a 10-year-old laptop that often gave up on them. This raw and unfiltered approach allowed their innermost resentment and pent-up rage to surface, creating an unforgettable musical experience.
The band hopes to connect with people who refuse to move on from the energy and vibe of the ’90s and those who crave grunge and alt-rock but are tired of sappy love songs. “Now I Hate Everything” is a sonic rebellion against the mundane, and its tracks anthems for the disenchanted.
The album art likewise, according to Egor, articulates the blackness and coldness of their hearts. Created by simply “(expletive) around with the free version of Canva,” it perfectly complements the raw authenticity of their music. Egor expresses gratitude to the “27 people (including their single mothers) who will listen to their EP”, while dismissing the rest with a succinct, “the rest can (expletive) off.“
Apebreeder‘s “Now I Hate Everything” is not just an EP, it’s a cathartic journey through the shadows of discontent, an unapologetic expression of raw emotion.
